There is a wonderful connection between painting and teaching and how it can keep you present and living in the moment, that elusive place where time stands still and you experience life. You can take time to play with materials or watch raindrops roll down a windowpane. When I paint, I relish the process, the feel and color of the paint. I experience a momentary stillness when I find the right subject matter. That transcendental moment when I’m at Stop and Shop and I become enraptured with a pair of artichokes. I like the subjects of my paintings to be natural and alive (even though in fact they are in the process of decaying). We take so much for granted in our everyday lives, we do not stop to observe the inherent beauty in our natural world, even if the moment it might capture us is during the daily grind of gathering the weekly groceries. I clarify the simplicity of the subject matter, treasure and savor the elements and endeavor to communicate the inherent beauty of our natural world, albeit in the form of 5 tomatoes. I spend so much time hanging out with the subject matter of my painting, that sometimes the subjects seem to take on a life of their own.
